Just like us, mental wellness is huge part of maintaining a healthy dog! Behavioral issues can overtake your life if your dog isn't getting enough metal stimulation. Most people think mental stimulation comes from giving their dog puzzles, and toys that make them think...and while that can be helpful, the best mental stimulation to create a well balanced, calm dog comes from basic daily commands and training. Taking your dog for a walk is mental exercise for the dog, letting them run and play with other dogs is not mental exercise.
Digging, chewing, jumping up, leash pulling, aggressive behavior towards other dogs, wandering off and/or running away are all signs of under stimulated dog brain. They NEED a JOB, and you are the EMPLOYER!
The choices are endless! But, feeding dry kibble for the life of your dog could shorten their life, believe it or not. The way dry kibble is processed leaves little to no nutritional value for their body to absorb. Adding fresh veggies and fruits (safe for your dog) to their dry kibble can be a awesome treat in many ways. There are many companies that offer a freeze dried and/or fresh option which you add to their daily diet.
Feeding table scraps isn't always the best route but, preparing your dog some of what you eat can be a safe and effective way to get that nutrition you are looking to implement. Dogs can't have all the foods, spices and seasonings we eat, but setting aside a little of what you are preparing for dinner before all the added flavors are included can be an easy way.
Does your dog have problem behaviors, health issues from age, or just just general issues you are concerned about? Taking the all natural or holistic route can be very beneficial. Herbs, essential oils, touch techniques, vegus nerve massage, chiropractic care, aromatherapy, and acupuncture are all great ways to help your dog.
When using natural remedies you are utilizing the most powerful and holistic way to treat your dog. Keep in mind that research is important to be certain it is safe for your dog...but this alternative can be the most effective in allot of cases. The use of CBD, essential oils, and herbs coupled with natural physical remedies can prove to be more effective than traditional medicine.
Use the word YES! Your dog should be hearing YES! more than NO! by the age of 16 weeks if you are utilizing training correctly. YES! is very important to teach your dog.
Always make your dog sit before touching and petting him/her. Being in a calm sit position before being rewarded with physical touch will teach them to not jump up on you for affection.
Make sure your dog is getting the proper amount of daily activity and learning commands. If you are noticing allot of chewing, digging and destroying your yard or home...your dog is trying to tell you he/she needs more time from you.
Pick up the POOP! This should be basic knowledge but it's not. I get asked allot how do I stop my dog from eating poop?!
PICK IT UP! If you let your dog out to do his/her business walk out there and retrieve it BEFORE they have a chance to eat it.
Make the Crate/bed a good place to be! This is their safety zone, NEVER a punishment place. Reward him/her for going in and laying down. Always make them sit or lay down before opening the door, then wait for your command to exit. Never force your dog into the crate, instead use a treat to real them in.
Never let your dog enter or exit your home before sitting and waiting for your command. Always ask for a sit and wait before opening the door. If you are going with them, YOU are always the leader and THEY are the follower...ESTABLISH DOMINANCE!
Gut health can be linked to so many other things...but the one major obvious sign to gut health can be what you find in the back yard. If your dog's poop is not solid, smoochy, hard to pick up or there is lack of it this can be a sign of gut health issues.
Probiotics have a great importance in the gut health area and are essential to balancing your dogs gut health issues. There are many brands to choose from and some fresh food and freeze dried foods offer probiotics right in the food itself! I like the GetJoy Co options for both food and gut health and encourage you to explore what this company has to offer for your dog. Improper gut health can lead to many other issues other than digestive upset and/or poop problems.
A dog's gut health is crucial for overall well-being because a healthy gut supports a strong immune system, aids in nutrient absorption, and influences various aspects of their health, including digestion, skin health, and even behavior.
The gastrointestinal tract is essentially the largest immune organ in the body, with at least 70% of a dog's immune system residing in their gut. A healthy gut microbiome helps the body fight off infections and diseases.
A healthy gut is essential for proper digestion and nutrient absorption, ensuring the dog gets the necessary vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients from their food. The gut microbiome plays a vital role in food digestion and metabolism, breaking down food and extracting nutrients. Research suggests a link between gut health and behavior, with a healthy gut microbiome potentially influencing mood and even cognitive function.
